Tulips

Spring is here and so are the tulips! Nothing symbolizes the coming of spring more than these bulb plants. Tulips can be found in nearly every color of the rainbow, with some varieties having petals in multiple tones or colors in a single bloom. Here in Southwest Michigan we are also fortunate to have the world famous tulip festival nearby in Holland Michigan each May. The Tulip Time Festival has taken place for the last ninety years. Over 5 million tulips bloom in the city in a myriad of colors. You can check out their website at https://www.holland.org/events/tulip-festival.

Latin name: Tulipa

Fun facts:

  • In the Netherlands, the different tulip colors have different meanings.

  • They are actually part of the lily family.

  • It is native to central Asia and is the national flower of Turkey and Afghanistan.

  • The word tulip is derived from the Persian word for turban.
