A popular legend surrounding the bleeding heart flower describes a prince who was desperately in love with a beautiful princess. The story details the lavish gifts he bestowed upon her and how each and every time she rejected his love. The prince was so overwhelmed with grief that he ended up taking his own life. And it is said the bleeding hearts grew where he fell. This story is often told while taking apart the flower since the different parts of the flower look like the gifts the prince gave the princess.
