When Should I Overseed My Lawn?
If your lawn looks thin, diseased, or damaged by pests, overseeding is a great way to restore its lushness. As a homeowner, you likely take pride in your lawn’s appearance. You don’t want bare spots, weeds, or large areas of yellow. And whether it’s perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, or tall fescue, overseeding can help. So, don’t fret, because no matter your grass type, you may not need a full lawn renovation to get the lush, green, weed-free yard. Today, we’re going to talk about when you, as a homeowner, should overseed your lawn.
Best Time for Lawn Overseeding
When it comes to overseeding, there’s no hard-and-fast rule that covers every grass type. You’ll need to tailor your approach to the grass seed you’re using, the weather in your area, your turf’s age and density, and the overall health of your lawn. Most importantly, you have to bear in mind that different grass plants require different lawn care strategies, and that no two lawns (or grass seeds) are alike.
Cool-Season Grasses
For cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescues, early fall is the ideal time to overseed. You should aim to overseed about 45 days before the first hard frost, usually in mid-September. Before starting, you’ll want to mow your lawn lower than you usually do, typically to between 1.5 inches and 2 inches. Next, you’ll want to aerate (or dethatch in some cases) your yard to remove material that may prevent the seed from contacting the soil, which will ensure the new seed germinates. You can also apply a thin layer of compost to help your lawn hold moisture.
Warm-Season Grasses
For warm-season grasses like Bermuda grass or Zoysia, late spring is the perfect time to overseed. To be certain your new grass seed takes root, you want to make sure you’re working with warm soil above 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and that you haven’t applied herbicides in the last 30 days. After that, you can follow the same procedures as with cool-season grass, and be sure to water your lawn immediately and consistently, typically two to three times per day depending on the seed mix you used.
