When Should I Aerate My Lawn?
It’s not easy to have a healthy lawn in Michigan. Soil compaction, poor drainage, and heavy foot traffic can all negatively impact healthy root growth. Sure, aeration can help, but when’s the best time?
Usually, the best time to aerate your lawn is between late summer and early fall. In today’s post, we’re going to give you a few tips to help determine the best time to aerate. So, if you’re a homeowner who’s been searching for a way to preserve your overall lawn health and keep your grass roots healthy, stay tuned!
When to Aerate Your Lawn
Aeration helps to ensure the healthy appearance of your soil surface by increasing drainage so it’s easier for water and nutrients to reach the grass roots. At its heart, aeration is pretty simple: you’re poking small holes in your lawn to loosen compacted soil, break up the thatch layer, and increase nutrient delivery to high-traffic areas. Most lawns should be aerated once per year.
The Screwdriver Test
If you have sandy soil, you likely don’t need aeration, as they tend to be resistant to compaction. But if you’ve noticed puddles in your yard after a hard rain, you might try the screwdriver test:
Grab a screwdriver with a blade that’s at least six inches long
Go outside after a good rain when the soil’s wet but not saturated
Applying normal pressure, slowly push the blade into your yard
If the screwdriver slides in easily, you’ve likely got a healthy lawn. But if it’s difficult to push it in, you may be dealing with compacted soil. And, in that case, you’re going to want to make yearly aeration a regular part of your lawn care regime to reduce compaction and improve the delivery of air, water, and nutrients.
Heavy Clay Soil
As a side note, heavy clay soil is often densely packed and can prevent nutrients from reaching your grass roots. If you have this type of soil, you’ll want to schedule yearly aeration, and likely ask about adding organic material to it after a core aeration.
