For some, cutting down trees results in severe compunction, but that does not need to be the case. There is a correct time to cut down and prune trees. In fact, when done properly, pruning makes the tree healthier. But how do you know when to cut down a tree? Look for these signs to determine whether or not you need to yell "Timber!"

  • For starters, if the tree is dead, that is a very good sign that it should come down!

  • If the tree is unhealthy and you notice dead branches or decay, it should be pruned or taken out before it negatively impacts other nearby trees.

  • If it has been badly damaged by a storm or lightning, that is also a good time to put it out of its misery.

  • Yet another valid reason to fell a tree is if the location has become dangerous. If the tree leans toward the house or shed, that could prove disastrous if blown over.
